Darlington West Cemetery – Chapel & Crematorium Redevelopment
Tangent Construction was appointed to deliver a complex extension to Darlington Crematorium, including a new chapel, expanded burial capacity, and improved infrastructure. The project was delivered across pre- and post-COVID phases.
Construction of new chapel with reinforced concrete slab and drainage
Refurbishment of existing cremators

Flood alleviation tanks and associated drainage
Tarmac and block-paved access roads
Ground stabilisation to reduce offsite spoil removal
Muck shift to create 500+ additional burial plots
Restricted Access: Burial plot area accessed via an old road; works coordinated around funeral schedules and limited parking
Resident Disruption: Complaints due to noise and road blockage resolved via restricted hours and out-of-hours plant movements
Season restrictions and licensing delays
Despite logistical and environmental constraints, the scheme successfully delivered a modernised facility and expanded burial provision for the community. Ground stabilisation reduced environmental impact, and lessons learned informed future planning and ecological compliance.
